Derbyshire’s YES! Scheme hails its first Fire Cadet Instructor 03/03/2014
Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service have been involved in Youth Education Schemes for a number of years and our dedicated Youth Workers, Operational Staff and Volunteers deliver a partnership project led by the Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service. The YES! scheme is targeted at young people aged 13-16 years who may have low self-esteem, be at risk of exclusion, disengaged with education, or may be young carers.
The YES! programme is an 8 session, 1 day per week scheme which works with many partners within Derbyshire from the referral stage through to the delivery of the scheme.
Through a mix of practical and classroom activities the students gain an understanding of Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service’s ‘drill type’ activities and our partners help deliver a wide variety of other units that are aimed at improving the students self-confidence/self-esteem and promote teamwork and mutual cooperation.
Through the YES! Scheme we also aim to contribute to the following outcomes:
- Reduce anti-social behaviour
- Improve school and work placement attendance levels
- Develop an understanding and appreciation for the communities in which the young people live
- Develop an aspiration for a more positive future
Our Partnership, Funding & Marketing Officer recently attended a Chamber of Commerce Networking event and met a former YES! Scheme participant. Two years on from that YES! Scheme she is a PA for a marketing agency and doing really well.
…and today DFRS enrolled a former YES! Scheme participant as a Cadet Volunteer Instructor.
These stories truly ratify all of the hard work that is involved in the development and delivery of our Youth Schemes be they YES! or Fire Cadets. All we need is to make a difference to one life and it’s all worthwhile.
