Emergency Services Cadets launches in Oldham 05/11/2013
For the past five weeks Emergency Services Cadets Pilot has been running at Oasis Academy Limeside, a primary school in Oldham. The programme is an afterschool club for year 5 and 6 which teaches the children about the roles of the Police, Fire and St John ambulance as well as safety skills.
The programme has proved very popular with the children; they have particularly enjoyed learning about the dangers of bonfires and how to deal with an unconscious casualty. This is particularly impressive given the programme is run by Cadets! The 15-18 year olds attended a week long residential training course in August at Holcombe Moor to provide them with the training they needed to deliver the syllabus to their younger peers. They said the training was good but a bit full on! Everyone involved in the programme has been really impressed with how well the peer leaders are running the course, a big well done to the four of them.
Currently there is a second pilot of ESC running in Handsworth in Birmingham, with four more due to start in February and a plan to open further units in April and September.
